Breast Procedures

Breast Enlargement
Augmentation Mammoplasty Procedure: Enhance the size and shape of the breast using saline implants. Mammogram required after age 35 or family history of breast cancer.

Length
1.5 to 2 hours

Anesthesia
General Outpatient Surgery

Side Effects
Temporary soreness, swelling, change in nipple sensation, bruising. Breast sensitive to stimulation for a few weeks.

Risk
Infection. Asymmetry. Tightening & hardening of scar tissue around the implant (“capsular contracture”), or rupture of implant; either may require surgery to release the scar tissue, to remove or replace the implant. Increase or decrease in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin, occasionally permanent. Accurate mammogram requires special technique.

Recovery
Tasks of daily living may be resumed immediately. Back to non-strenuous work (no lifting greater than 10 lbs) in 5 to 7 days. No strong pushing, pulling or repetitive upper body movements for 3 weeks.

Exercise
Resume 1/3 intensity @ 3 weeks. Low impact activities @ 1/3 duration of exercise, repetitions, amount of weight and pulse rate. 2/3 intensity @ 6 weeks. Full intensity including high impact (running, horse back riding, high impact aerobics) @ 8 weeks.

Physical Contact with Breast
3 to 4 weeks.

Fading & Scar Improvement
6 to 12 months

Swelling
Moderate/Significant 4 weeks, Subtle/Mild 2 to 3 months, all of which are dependent upon extent of procedure(s).

Duration of Results
Variable. Implants may require removal or replacement at some time in the future. TIME frame usually years or decades!

Office Visit
1st 5 to 7 days / 2nd Visit 10 to 14 days

Anticipated # of visits
4 to 5 the first 3 months then yearly.

Reduction of Breast Tissue / Raise & Reshape Sagging Breasts
Reduce the size of large, sagging breast by removing fat, glandular tissue & skin. (Can alleviate medical problems caused by large breasts, & may be covered by insurance.)

3 to 3.5 hours

Anesthesia
General Outpatient Surgery/Over night hospital stay

Side Effects
Temporary pain or discomfort, swelling, bruising, numbness, dry breast skin. Permanent scars. Possible loss of ability to breast-feed.

Risk
Asymmetrical breast or unevenly positioned nipples. Infection. Permanent loss of feeling and/or loss of tissue in nipples or breasts. Slow or prolonged healing.

Recovery
Tasks of daily living may be resumed immediately. Back to non-strenuous work (no lifting greater than 10 lbs) in 1 to 2 weeks. No strong pushing, pulling or repetitive upper body movements for 3 weeks.

Procedure
Reduce enlarged, female-like breasts in men using liposuction and/or cutting out excess glandular tissue. (Sometimes covered by medical insurance)

Side Effects
Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, burning sensation.

Risk
Infection. Injury to the skin. Rippling or bagginess of skin. Asymmetry. Excessive scarring if tissue was cut away. Need for second procedure to remove additional tissue.

Recovery
Tasks of daily living may be resumed immediately. Back to non-strenuous work (no lifting greater than 10 lbs) in 5 to 7 days. No strong pushing, pulling or repetitive upper body movements for 3 weeks .

Thick, wide scars; skin loss; infection. Unevenly positioned nipples. Permanent loss of feeling in nipples or breast.
